Ask almost any employer whether they bring injured employees back on light duty and the answer is yes. Ask them to show you the list of light duty tasks, and most cannot, because it does not exist until somebody needs it.

That gap matters to your people as much as to your costs. An injured employee who comes back to real work stays connected to their team and their paycheck, and one who sits at home waiting for a call starts to wonder whether anyone wants them back.
